Why Doesn’t Team Flash Kill The Thinker? | CW’s The Flash

By Jeremy Carden

This post is related to one of the most emotional episodes of Season 4. “Lose Yourself” certainly was an episode that had me feeling all types of emotions. Sadly, I was more annoyed than depressed over Ralph’s death at the hands of Devoe.

killer06

Alright, I know that different superheroes have their own rules about killing villains.

However, there has to be a point where the consideration of crossing that line needs to be addressed for the sake of the greater good.

No joke, I did enjoy that particular episode of The Flash. I believe it was one of this season’s better episodes. It was cool to see Joe and Iris get victories in their fights. I didn’t even mind Iris too much in that episode.

tumblr_p7ctyuXHHz1tyusgdo4_540

Heck, I think this is the sort of Iris we should have been seeing all season!

lose-yourself

But my main gripe about the episode (as with most episodes this season) is Barry Allen.

A majority of episodes this season have felt sort of rinse-and-repeat in terms of them finding a bus-meta, saying they’ll do whatever it takes to prevent Thinker from stealing their bodies, they fail and then mope at the end of the episode due to their failure.

The-Flash-Lose-Yourself-Promo

Yes, Ralph can be, has been and was an overall tool (just to use the nicest word that I could think of to describe him). However, he was a lovable tool when the script didn’t have him being overly annoying, selfish or afraid.

Seriously, there was a lack of consistency with his character this season. I feel like there were at least three or four episodes about Ralph overcoming fear or his own selfishness for the sake of becoming a hero.

He made a valid point about taking out Devoe FOR GOOD and by ANY means necessary.

16

True, it could be chalked up to him being afraid for his life (because he has every right to be), but I hate how Barry shot him down every chance he got in the episode because Ralph wasn’t following the guidelines of “Mr. and Mrs. Star Labs.”

Funny how Barry is more than willing to beat down his “friends” and “teammates” to keep them in line, but doesn’t show that same kind of gusto when it comes to defeating his enemy.

Now, I’m not saying that anyone who litters or ignores a stop sign deserves to be skewered by Killer Frost, breached to a deserted planet by Vibe or get the “Reverse Flash treatment” through the heart…

However, at what point is enough enough?

DeVoe_absorbs_Ralph

How many metas (and just regular people for that matter) have to die IN FRONT OF YOUR EYES before you decide that it is time to “cross that line” to prevent the enemy from hurting people?

At the end of the season, if the entire planet is on the line because of Devoe’s “enlightenment device” then I don’t want to hear Barry and the others crying about the fate of the world or how they’re not going to fail because they LET things get to level of danger. All of it boils down to them not doing what needed to be done while they still had the chance.

That is why I didn’t care about Barry and the others being sad because the blood of ALL of the pipeline metas and Ralph are on their hands as much as Devoe’s.

tumblr_p7ctyuXHHz1tyusgdo6_540

Going back to what I mentioned above about Iris, I still feel like she was not that annoying in “Losing Yourself.” However, there was one piece of dialogue between her and Ralph that didn’t sit too well with me.

I love how Iris talked to Ralph about not killing the person that wants to kill him. She started off on common ground because she DOES know what kind of situation Ralph is in right now.

For the second half of Season 3, the main focus of Team Flash was to prevent Savitar from killing Iris. She had to deal with the fact that she was possibly living on a ticking clock because everything Team Flash tried ended up failing (until HR sacrificed himself).

31143884_2441431095882994_395356833428013056_n

Here in Season 4, the focus of Team Flash is to prevent Thinker from killing the bus-metas (including Ralph). However, history repeats itself because Thinker is 20+ steps ahead of everything the team can think of. Similar to Savitar, who was a Barry that had lived through everything present Barry had meaning that he would be aware of any tactic that Team Flash thought of if Barry was there to know about it.

So, I agree that Iris can relate to where Ralph was at that point in the season.

However, her saying that killing isn’t the tough call but the wrong one

Eh, hard for her to be the person to say that since she was the one who pulled the trigger leading to Savitar’s death.

How’s that for the pot calling the kettle black?

285803 (2)

Also, wasn’t Iris firing at The Mechanic with lethal shots during their showdown in S.T.A.R Labs? If it wasn’t for her blocking the shots with her blade, then I doubt she would have survived!

I believe Barry mentioned that he knew what Ralph was going through as well. In the sense of wanting to kill his enemy, I could see that being true. He fought the urge to kill Zoom and Reverse Flash at different points in the series.

However, I don’t think he can relate with Ralph when it comes to someone wanting to take his life.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think ANY of the major villains on The Flash have wanted Barry dead. For the most part, they all wanted or needed him alive for their own master plans:

url-6

  • Reverse Flash needed Barry’s speed in order to get back to his own time.
  • Zoom needed Barry’s speed in order to save his life, and then his speed in order to fuel the device he wanted to use to destroy every multiverse aside from Earth-1.
  • Savitar needed Barry alive to ensure his own existence. It was the death of Iris that mattered to him.
  • Devoe needed Barry released from the Speed Force to create the bus-metas. Then needed him out of the way to not interfere in his plans, and in the episode “Therefor She Is” we learned that he has an even bigger need for Barry in the near future. However, he will kill The Flash once that plan is finished; most likely referring to the Enlightenment.

So, I don’t think Barry can say that he knows what it is like to be on the run (no pun intended) for his life as Ralph was this season.

the-flash-lose-yourself-photo004-1523644038203_1280w

It just made me cringe throughout the episode when Barry kept preaching about how they don’t cross that line when it has been crossed SEVERAL times in previous seasons by members of Team Flash.

  • Joe killed Weather Wizard’s brother at the end of the very first episode of The Flash, and then “Flashpoint Joe” killed The Rival. In both scenarios, Barry had defeated them by stopping their cyclones that would have brought major destruction to Central City. Then after assuming the battle was over, the bad guys tried to strike when Barry was vulnerable. Joe shot them in the back to protect Barry and that was that!
  • Iris did the same thing when she shot Savitar in the back (killing him) because Barry had his back turned after defeating him. That could be called poetic justice since Savitar stabbed her in the back resulting in her death in the future that Barry saw earlier that season. However, death is still death!
  • Barry killed two of the Earth-2 doppelgangers during the opening episodes of Season 2! I believe he trapped Atom Smasher in a container where the radiation killed him, and then he killed the “Sandman” after learning how to use his lightning bolt technique from “Jay Garrick.”

Guys, I’m just naming a few deaths that Team Flash caused off the top of my head. Sad to say, but I think there may have been a few that I missed.

Let’s be honest, if Devoe was about to kill Barry and Iris had to make the call; she would have killed him. Just as she did with Savitar when he was about to strike Barry when his back was turned.

tumblr_p7ctyuXHHz1tyusgdo5_540

Heck, I could see Iris looking at Mechanic dead in the face before killing Devoe saying; “You asked me how far was I willing to go to save my husband…” *pulls trigger* “….that’s how far….” all because she loves her man along with demonstrating the strength of their love.

No questions asked if that murder took place, but if one of the other team members wants to kill then it’s a problem????? Heck, remember when Iris stopped Killer Frost from killing Amunet Black after she crashed her bachelorette party?

tumblr_ort74n1DRu1tnvsx0o1_250

Season 3 Caitlin/Killer Frost was right when she told Barry, “But why would you care? You got Iris. You got your happy ending. Everyone else be damned.

All of Team Flash can fall by the wayside, but as long as Mr. and Mrs. Star Labs are alive and well…everyone else be damned.

Dragon Ball Z: How Did Cooler Survive Being Blasted Into the Sun?

By Jeremy Carden

Bscap0025

First off, let me just say that Cooler is one of my favorite movie villains in the Dragon Ball franchise.

He is indeed much “cooler” than his younger brother Frieza (yeah I know I couldn’t help but let a cooler-pun slip out of my mouth)!

Wallpapers-dragon-ball-freezer

I mean Frieza demonstrated the awesome transformations that the Frost Demon race was capable of performing to bottle up their power.

images

However, his older brother took it a step further by giving us one of the coolest (see I did it again!) transformations with his 5th form!

Mecha_Freeza_and_Cold_6

When Mecha Frieza returned to earth to exact his revenge on Goku, he came back looking like he was given a patch up job with some spare refrigerator parts found in a scrap yard…

One_of_Cooler's_Clones

Meta-Cooler appears on New Namek with a much more impressive new robotic body than Frieza.

Since it has been established that Cooler is “cooler” than Frieza, there is still one question that is left unanswered; How in the world did he survive being blasted into the sun?

Goku_Counter's_Cooler_Rock_Splatter_1

At the end of Cooler’s Revenge, Goku launched a Super Kamehameha Wave that pushed Cooler’s Supernova back at the powerful tyrant. Cooler was left clinging on to the attack as Goku’s energy wave pushed him into the sun.

Screenshot_4

I’ve always questioned why Cooler didn’t just “jump off” the energy attacks in time to avoid being burned to a crisp. The distance from the earth to the sun is 92,960,000 miles and it seemed like Goku’s Super Kamehameha attack was moving extremely fast if it had enough power to be shot from earth to the sun in what seemed to be seconds!

Cooler was in a difficult situation as he was being pushed back by his own Supernova and Goku’s attack. Though I don’t see how he couldn’t somehow manage to escape.

Gohan_Returns_-_Frieza_vs_Kamehameha

Looking back at when Goku fired a Super Kamehameha blast at 100% Frieza on Namek, the one moment Frieza had over his brother was when he escaped the Super Saiyan’s trademark attack.

Despite Goku having the power advantage, Frieza was able to get out of the beam collision and knock the Saiyan into the molten lava of Namek!

Screenshot_5

When he finally hits the sun, Cooler is reverted back to his “base” form which is actually his 4th form if you want to compare him to Frieza. Remembering that he did this to himself by not killing Goku as a baby when he had the chance, the Supernova exploded and a bright flash came from the sun before it went back to normal.

Despite being cool, Cooler was no match for the heat of the sun!

Ghjghj

Then we get to the next movie The Return of Cooler where the tyrant is now in a new body and is far more powerful than he was before! In the first movie, his 4th form was being dominated by Goku in base form!

GokuVsMCooler(YASTIE)

In his final form, Cooler was dominated by Super Saiyan Goku. As Meta-Cooler, he is capable of taking down 2 Super Saiyans and Piccolo (after fusing with Kami) with no problem at all.

Toward the end of the film, he finally explains how he became a part of the Big Gete Star. Now from my perspective, I can understand how that one computer chip somehow became active and began absorbing components from around it that was floating around in space. So from that one computer chip, the entire massive structure which is known as the Big Gete Star came to be.

Based on the way Cooler explained the story, some parts of his body (including his brain) was floating around in space and was also absorbed into the components of the Big Gete Star and from there his consciousness took over this giant planet eater. In a way, it seems that Meta-Cooler is like Brainiac from the Superman series who travels around space “collecting” planets.

Brainiac-animated

For Brainiac it was scanning planets for information before destroying them. In the case of the “Big Gete Cooler Star” it was about using the power of a planet’s core to fuel the entire machine.

Which is kind of ironic considering that before his resurrection as Meta-Cooler, he was in the Planet Trade Organization with his father and Frieza “collecting” planets (along with destroying them on occasion).

hqdefault (2)

Now when I really think about it, there are two ways that Cooler could have survived being sent to the surface of the sun with the end result being his remains floating around in space before being absorbed into the Big Gete Star.

Screenshot_8

  1. When the Supernova attack finally exploded, Cooler was caught in the blast because he was literally being pressed up against the sun with his Supernova right on top of him. The shock wave of the blast could have sent his remains into the vacuum of space where he was just floating around.
  2. Cooler used Instant Transmission at the last second to escape the explosion of his Supernova on the sun to salvage what was left of his existence (and body) into the vacuum of space.

#2 might sound a bit far-fetched but hear me out because there are possible clues to this in Cooler’s Revenge AND The Return of Cooler.

tumblr_m4rglsmmjW1qfbz1so1_500

After Goku uses Instant Transmission to escape Cooler’s Supernova, the Saiyan boasts about his new technique.

640px-CIT

Cooler remarks that it is one of his favorite techniques as well and he uses is to land a powerful punch to the Saiyan’s jaw.

The big question is; when and how did Cooler learn how to use Instant Transmission?

download (2)

Now as far as we know from the anime and manga, the natives of the Planet Yardart are the ones who came up with the technique.

hqdefault (3)

Yardrart is the planet where the Ginyu Force was originally on route to before Frieza called them to Namek. Goku said that when he jumped into one of the ships belonging to the force, he started up the engines and flew off! The ship randomly flew into space and Goku barely escape the destruction of Namek. It seems that since he did not have time to plot a course (or if he even knew how to set the ship to a certain destination), the ship sent Goku to the most recent coordinates in its database.

images (1)

Could Cooler have attacked, taken over or destroyed Planet Yardrat himself and learned the technique?

It could be that after becoming one with the Big Gete Star, Cooler attacked the planet and absorbed the information from one of the natives.

Looking at Cooler’s Revenge, it is also quite possible that Cooler was able to use the technique prior to becoming Meta-Cooler.

1398727987_1

As far as I can tell, no one in the Frost Demon Clan is able to sense Ki signatures. This was made clear when Goku was fighting Frieza.

KingColdFrieza

While Future Trunks was transforming into a Super Saiyan, if King Cold COULD sense power levels then he would have been able to detect that Trunks was more powerful than his son and even himself (while in that form).

tumblr_static_323332-cooler_s_armored_squadron

Think back to Cooler’s Revenge, when his Armored Squadron was attacking Goku: Cooler appeared out of nowhere.

SquadronEnergyWaveVolley

After Goku and Gohan fell over the waterfall and into the river, Cooler’s men blasted the forest into a wasteland. Then what happened? Cooler appeared out of nowhere.

20101114050520!Dbzmovie5_605

Piccolo killed two of the squadron members and was about to do the same to Salza before he was blasted through the chest with a Death Beam. Where did the attack come from? Cooler because he appeared out of nowhere!

hqdefault

Finally after Goku ate a Senzu Bean and emerged from the cave he was hiding in, he is taunted from the sky by a murderous tyrant holding a badly injured Piccolo. Who was it? COOLER AND HE APPEARED OUT OF NOWHERE!!

Another thing to remember is that Cooler was never seen where a Scouter unlike his men. This could mean that he either has no interest in wearing one or he can simply sense power levels.

280px-CoolerCoolersRevenge01

How could he appear out of nowhere at random multiple times during the movie when his men were doing battle against the Z-Fighters?

Again, it could mean that he could sense Ki because he literally came out of nowhere exactly where the battles were occurring. Now it could have just been because he is very fast and that could explain how he was able to get to all of those places at just the right time or it could have been because of Instant Transmission!

It stands to reason that Cooler did know Instant Transmission in his first movie, but the writers simply decided to omit his use of it in favor of him saving for his battle with Goku on New Namek.

fIikHd2

Keep in mind that in the first movie, it does not seem like Cooler needed to use it against Goku. He was mopping the floor with him and it was clear that Cooler was much faster than Goku after transforming. It wasn’t until Goku went Super Saiyan did Cooler get a beating. The only time Cooler would have needed to use the technique was when he was being blasted into the sun!

If you ask me the only real question is when and how he picked up the move. Considering that he goes around taking over and destroying planets, Cooler could have come across it at some point and learned it from a Yardart native on the actual Planet Yardrat or one of them on another planet.

PlanetKannasa

Frieza wanted to take over the Planet Kanassa in the Bardock special because it was rumored to have some sort of psychic powers like being able to read minds. The same could be said about the abilities of the people of Yardart being rumored about around the galaxy and Cooler wanted to learn such a technique that allowed him to travel to one place to another in an instant.

Now regardless as to whether or not it was Instant Transmission or being simply blown away from the sun by the shock wave of the explosion, Cooler’s remains were sent into space before being absorbed into the Big Gete Star.

1280px-Frieza_floats_half_dead_through_space

It is very similar to how Frieza’s remains were floating in space after being cut in half by his own energy disk, getting hit by Goku’s Angry Kamehameha Wave and being caught in the explosion of Namek! Considering he was able to survive all that says a lot about the incredible endurance and biology of Frieza’s family. Especially when it comes to them being able to survive not only in space but after serious injury that would kill any other normal beings.

COLD_E_FREEZA

Frieza was eventually found by his father and repaired to be more powerful than ever.

Meta-CoolerCreated

Cooler’s remains were picked up by the Big Gete Star and he was reborn to more powerful than ever. He even created a new metal body for himself along with having the Cyclopian Guards acting as a first line of offense when taking over a planet.

TrueMetaCooler

Another thing to think about is the possibility of a portion of Cooler’s head being the only thing that was left of Cooler’s body that was not completely destroyed in the sun. Just check out this giant form of the core of the Big Gete Star that contains what was left of the organic Cooler. the only part that does not look robotic is one side of his head and face which is a much different color (purple and red) than the wiring and metal of his body.

3501853-frieza+survives+planet-buster+7

Now compare it to Frieza’s head where you can see his organic form having half of his head blasted off as you can see above.

Mecha_Frieza-620x

As Mecha Frieza, that part of his head was mechanically repaired which resembles the Core-Cooler from the Big Gete Star.

Screenshot_9

In the Team Four Star Abridged version of The Return of Cooler, they poked fun at the fact that Cooler’s remains were floating around space and came in contact with the Big Gete Star (or at least the computer chip that started it all). As humorous as this scene was, it is probably accurate in the fact that only a portion of Cooler’s head and brain remained after he was burned up in the sun. It seems that unlike his brother who had nearly the complete portion of his upper torso intact (aside from half of his head and one of his arms), Cooler only had part of his head floating around in space.

5th_form_meta_cooler_by_brolyeuphyfusion9500-d4xtmny

Another thing that fans wonder about is why Cooler did not go into his final form as Meta-Cooler. I really wish we could have seen that because it would have been epic! Since his body duplicates get repaired thanks to the Big Gete Star whenever they are damaged and improve after each injury Cooler did not have a need to transform. Not to mention Cooler was in 4th form (or what was left of his body) when absorbed into the Big Gete Star and not his 5th form.

With all of that being said, how do you think Cooler survived being blasted into the sun?
